Jannie ~ in Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Looking for a Home

jannie Jannie is an 8 to 10 year old female silky who is being fostered by United Yorkie Rescue in the Ft. Lauderdale area. Jannie is almost blind from ongoing infections in both eyes left untreated. This poor sweet baby was left in the back yard of a rescue organization in the middle of the night tied to her kennel with a garbage bag about 4 months ago. She is up to date on her vaccinations, is heartworm negative. She is crate and leash trained and gets along fine with small dogs are fine. She weighs about 10 - 10.5 lbs and seems to be housebroken.
Here's what her foster mom says - March 29, 2003 - "You wouldn't believe the difference in her! I'm amazed myself, but I have to keep reminding myself that for the last four months of her life she was in a cage and being tended to every day by different people...So she didn't have anyone consistent that she could bond with, and I'm sure that may her distrustful. She is becoming very loving and curious about her surroundings and I can tell you that her vision has improved dramatically since I have had her! She even saw a clear plastic lid that goes on a drink cup today, from a distance of about 10 feet, and went over to investigate! I have a little 5 lb. foster pup in my home that I was holding in my lap last night and Jannie came over to investigate. Well, little 5 lb. Buster yipped at her, which surprised me, and she went running the other way! She is NOT aggressive to other dogs and she has lost ANY aggression towards people too, it appears."jannie
"She will make someone a wonderful little companion. She will be getting a bath tomorrow and I'll try to get some new pictures of her. She even looks happier since she came here, which makes me happy. We still love our rocking chair times, although now that she is becoming more confident, she rolls over on her back for bellyrubs..........so sweet!"

We have also learned, after a visit to the veterinary opthalmologist (eye vet), that Jannie has "dry eye". This is due to long-term and prolonged neglect before she came into rescue. But with consistent therapy the corneal sensation may return, leading to her doing a better job of protecting it by blinking. Better vision is expected to return to the left eye in the long run because it is less damaged to begin with. Once the corneas are a little clearer, it will be easier to assess the health of the lenses; and her confidence levels will begin to rise as she gradually sees better.

Although she is not in one of our foster homes, we are helping the rescue that has Jannie to find a wonderful, forever home for Jannie that will be able to be patient and work with her. She is in a foster home in the Ft. Lauderdale, FL area at this time. Preference will be given to local applicants. Jannie's new family will be expected to sign a contract agreeing to provide proper care for her, and there will be an adoption fee or donation.
